From the Instructor:
I started running in 2002. I always wanted to be a runner, but running hurt! My lungs, my legs, everything. So I would try for a while and always quit, convinced I just wasn't born to be a runner.

In 2002 I set a goal to become a runner and committed to a 3 month training program. My first month of running was hell. I felt like throwing up half the time, and because I did not have a coach or any guidance I was running improperly and much to fast for my abilities so I ended up with injuries.

As I learned more, applied that knowledge and stayed consistent with the running, I began to hate it less, and even started to enjoy it. It wasn't easy, but I was dedicated and that dedication paid off. I would come home from working a 12 hr shift at the hospital- exhausted, legs aching, wanting nothing more than to put my feet up and zone out. But instead I would take off my scrubs and put on my running clothes. Even as the voices said- it is too late, too dark, you are too tired, you still have 2 more shifts to go and need your rest, we can skip the run tonight- I was lacing up my shoes and heading out the door.

It never took more than 10 minutes for the voices to cease and a sense of calm, peace and joy to take over. Not only from the physical act of increasing blood flow and oxygen to my brain and other body tissues, but from the mental appreciation of having overcome the path of least resistance to make the right choice for me and stick with it.

I always, ALWAYS, felt better after the run. And I am quite sure it is a large part of what kept me sane as a nurse. It is still a large part of what keeps me sane today :-)

It has also allowed me some personal victories and amazing experiences. My first goal was a 10km, then a half marathon (21km) and finally a marathon (42.2km) which I ran in Flanders Fields Belgium in September 2003. Since then I have run many more races, including the New York Marathon and in April of this year I will run the Boston Marathon.

I am passionate about running and what it can do for you in your life!
